Fazer Brainfood Hack with Host

Are you passionate about food and improving the wellbeing of people? Do you want to be part of disrupting workplace catering to better support employees’ cognitive performance? Do you have a great idea for measuring mental agility? Fazer invites enthusiastic digital problem-solvers to co-develop solutions to these types of challenges at Fazer Brainfood Hack.

Fazer – Taste sensations since 1891_

Fazer is an international family-owned company offering quality bakery, confectionery, biscuit and grain products as well as food and café services. Fazer operates in eight countries and exports to around 40 countries. Fazer’s mission is to create taste sensations. Fazer’s success, ever since its establishment in 1891, has been based on the best product and service quality, beloved brands, the passion of its skilful people and the Group’s responsible ways of working. This year marks Fazer’s 125th anniversary and 150 years from the birth of Karl Fazer, the founder of this successful Group. In 2015, Fazer Group had net sales of more than 1.5 billion euros and nearly 15,000 employees. Fazer’s operations comply with ethical principles that are based on the Group’s values and the UN Global Compact.

The performance of our brain is important throughout the whole lifespan, from child to senior. Schoolchildren and students need brainpower to learn, working-age people to focus and create, and older people to enjoy vital senior years. Food and nutrition together with sleep and physical and mental exercise are the central factors of cognitive performance and brain health.

Fazer has started a major new research and business development programme called Brainfood. In the programme, we study the connection between food and cognitive performance and aim to create innovative solutions to maintain and improve brainpower and well-being at the different stages of life. Fazer is looking for start-ups and digital problem-solvers to co-develop such solutions.

Goal of the hack_

The goal is to find solutions that improve cognitive performance with the combination of food, sleep and activity. The challenges are divided into four main categories:

The goal is to find solutions that improve cognitive performance with the combination of food, sleep and activity. The challenges are divided into four main categories:

The digital ‘plate’ model How can we help individuals make better daily choices for their productivity with seamless digital services? How can we use and analyse the growing amount of personal data related to food, sleep, activity, recovery, meditation and biomarkers? How can different dietary choices play a role? How could we re-invent the plate model for digital era? The current plate model is for the whole population; how can we make the new one more personal, but still relevant to the big audience? What are the means and tools to make the model also fun to use?

Disruption of workplace catering Visit an Amica restaurant and experience the current concept of workplace catering. How would you disrupt the workplace catering concept so that it better supports employees’ cognitive performance and productivity? How can we nudge people to make better choices, for example, via on-site displays, apps, sensors and other digital services? How can we create a solution that is generally appealing and includes incentives to engage?

Tracking of cognitive performance How could we measure cognitive performance in an effective and fun way using the latest technologies? How could we make the tracking easy for the masses and as automated as step counters, or gamify it so that it becomes motivational, inspiring and something that you want to share with your friends like many sports applications already do?

Open: How to improve cognitive performance? How would you improve the cognitive performance and brainpower of different age groups (daycare and schoolchildren, students, employees, seniors)? The concept needs to have a connection to food and nutrition.
