Fortum will host a service innovation challenge together with Industryhack on October 21st – 23rd. The company will invite 12 teams from service design and software development to innovate and develop new services for home-owners with solar energy production.
Customers’ expectations towards services are increasing. Fortum’s mission is to provide living services, that are responsive and wrap around customers’ daily lives, constantly learning more about their needs, intents and preferences. Living services can flex and adapt to become more relevant, engaging and useful.
The goal of the hack is to develop proof-of-concepts of digital living services for home-owners with solar panels. Fortum is looking for partners to improve the solar purchasing process and customer experience with teams that have skills from data analytics to service design, software development and user experience.
Becoming familiar with solar energy Customers don’t realize their potential in solar production. How to better identify, analyze, and educate potential customers who do not yet have, or even haven’t thought about getting solar panels? How to visualize, motivate and make own solar energy production a desirable alternative for home-owners?
From installation of solar panels to seamless service experience tailored for me How to make customer’s purchasing process to look and feel easy? How to ease customer with issues that feels suspicious. How to offer easy and flexible financing or convenient and monitored delivery and installation experience as possible with digital services?
From solar panel ownership to Fortum living service experience How to make the most out of electricity generation and consumption data to enhance the customer experience? How to utilize available data to create customer a feeling of true care – emotion to have a control of his home home and creating motivation and needs for added services, like batteries, electric vehicles etc.
Open challenge Digitalisation is one of the key focus areas in Fortum’s strategy. What other services could be innovated? What other data or partnerships could be used to provide customers with additional services and customer experience?
The winning team will get 10 000 euros. The prize will be paid against invoice (excluding VAT) or as salary.
Apply with a team of 2-3 people. All applications will be reviewed after the deadline and all applicants will be informed one week after the deadline. 12 teams will be selected to join the hackathon.
Ideas are free for everyone to use but the IPR for any software codebase or documents produced during the competition will stay with the participating team. The host has the first right of refusal to negotiate further collaboration with the team to purchase or continue working on the project initiated at the hack.

City Solutions division is responsible for developing sustainable city solutions into a growing business unit for Fortum. The division comprises heating and cooling, waste to energy, biomass and other circular economy solutions as well as electricity sales and services.
The purpose of the Fortum Customer Journey –program is to accelerate Fortum’s Retail Customer Sales’ transition from product to service sales and make a step change in service design, customer experience and commercialization. In addition to the higher customer engagement and satisfaction, the new concept will enable higher value creation from the existing and acquired customer bases thus enabling new business growth opportunities.
The program will create attractive customer solutions for instance around solar panels and related products and services by utilizing in-depth customer understanding, agile development methods as well as internal and external products, services and partners.
Although the solar panels are used as one of the core product in the Fortum Customer Journey –project, the ultimate target is to develop a generic concept which is applicable not only for solar panels and related products but also for other products and services which will be added into Fortum’s Customer Retail Sales’ product portfolio.
Hotel accommodation, food and drinks during the hackathon are all covered by Fortum. There will be bus from center of Helsinki to Fortum’s HQ in Keilaniemi on Friday morning and back to city center on Sunday evening.
