Ingenious Maintenance with Siemens

With industrial products, machinery and complex systems that may have a lifecycle decades long, improving maintenance processes can have a huge impact on both quality and costs. With better understanding of the process and better ways of managing maintenance work, a more proactive approach can be achieved. This is where we need your help.

Through increased scope of digital solutions the company generates customer value in the areas of connected eMobility, digital grid, digital industry and connected buildings. The open, secure and easy-to-use IoT operating system MindSphere is at the center of Siemens’ digital ecosystem. Together with ecosystem partners the company is aiming for new digital services enabling the next level of productivity, flexibility, availability and efficiency for the customers and the digital society.

The Challenge

Through this innovation challenge, Siemens Finland wants to take their predictive maintenance capabilities and services to the next level. They are asking for your ideas for and expertise in designing and implementing solutions that would enable the predictive maintenance of Siemens industrial machinery, facilities and buildings.

Using IoT solutions, artificial intelligence and/or machine learning, how can we better understand and predict industrial process’ maintenance needs? How can they support business management, through e.g. transparency of total costs and resource utilization? And most importantly, how can prediction tools be built into such a solution that it guides and supports the average maintenance worker in his/her work? Can new technologies, like Augmented Reality, come in handy?

The challenge is to create predictive maintenance management solutions, that would answer the following needs:

  • Simple, visual user interface. The solutions should be designed with the maintenance worker’s user experience and productivity as a starting point, supporting visual alerts and simple instructions. They could also have a dashboard or other showing the overall status and other insights of the process for business managers.
  • Easy configuration. How could the solution be easily applicable and configurated for various industries and different processes/machinery? These can be very unique, but they all share the same need for predictive maintenance. A tool that is simple to configurate to new use cases in different environments would also potentially be globally scalable and therefore attractive to Siemens corporation.
  • Open-source, compatibility. The solutions should utilize already available and open-source solutions as the basis. They must also be compatible with Cloud Foundry, thus making them possible to later implement on Siemens’ MindSphere platform.

Teams are free to explore the industries and industrial processes that Siemens operates in, and choose the one they want to build their solution concept’s use case and demo for in the first phase. Therefore, the key issues here are understanding the chosen process, knowing which data should be collected and analyzed, and visualizing these into actionable insights and suggestions for both maintenance work and business management.

To help the development of proof-of-concepts during the challenge, we have reserved some key people and resources to support your work.

Mentors & Experts

Each team will be assigned with their own mentor from Siemens. There will also be industry and process experts to help teams understand maintenance work, how predictions are done as-is and what are the signals and patterns that predict repairing needs.

Data & Software

Process data will be made available to each teams on request, based on team’s chosen process and use case.

The two-day event will be organised at the Siemens office in Derby Business Park in Espoo. The building contains Siemens equipment and sensors related to heating, ventilation, electricity as well as smart systems. In the challenge kickoff visit, on October 11th, a tour of the building will be given to showcase these and the data they produce. The facilities are also at participants’ use during the two-day event.

Other tools & Tech

If the teams wish to use additional devices and platforms to support their work, Industryhack offers Samsung devices, such as VR gear, smartphones and tablets, and IBM Bluemix and Watson for free use during the challenge.


Each participating team will be paid a reward of 1500 eur. Rewards are paid against invoice after the team has presented their demo and the customer has made the decision about the pilot (this will happen within 30 days). Best teams have a chance to get to pilot their solution with Siemens.

Hackathon (mandatory for all team members) – November 2nd 10 am – November 3rd 6 pm at Siemens office in Espoo, Finland

Pilot proposal submission deadline (for the best teams chosen by jury) – November 15th

Apply with a team of 2-3 people. All applications will be reviewed after the deadline and all applicants will be informed one week after the deadline. Groups that submit early have a small advantage because we have more time to read their applications. 6-8 teams will be selected to join the challenge.

Who will own my idea?

Ideas are free for everyone to use but the IPR for any software codebase or documents produced during the competition will stay with the team. The host has the first right of refusal to negotiate further collaboration with the team to purchase or continue working on the project initiated during the challenge.
