What if an apple tree could tell it needs to be pruned, and pruning scissors in the shed could react by telling they can help? Imagine how this could change the way we do gardening. And how it could bring more value to our lives. This innovation challenge aims at making it possible for plants to “talk” and tools and available services to “listen” – with the help of an innovative software based IoT solution, Thing2Data.
Fiskars is one of the oldest companies in the western world. Thing2Data is an identity management system, a database of things, that can bring intelligence to unintelligent things without requiring any added electronics. It’s a two-year consortium initiative to develop common practices for the identity management of individual things, for the benefit of different use cases in retail, logistics, manufacturing, services and in consumers’ everyday lives.
This challenge will be the first chance for developers to get access to the Thing2Data API, which will become publicly available later. Learn more about Thing2Data at http://thing2data.com/.
We are looking for design and developer teams to experiment with Thing2Data, in attempt to design and build digital services for Fiskars gardening products. Fiskars wants to help all home gardeners to achieve their gardening goals by giving them personalized and valuable guidance as well as access to relevant services like sharing and recycling of tools, seeds and plants. With the help of Thing2Data, the products could potentially carry additional information and valuable content, such as user instructions, or offer an interface for creating direct service requests for the product or making changes in its ownership. Another relevant opportunity for Fiskars is improving the traceability of the products throughout their lifecycle – how could Thing2Data be used to help with this?
All participating teams will be paid 1500 eur. Prices are paid against invoice after the teams have presented their demos and given feedback. Best teams have a chance for pilot projects with Fiskars.
Apply with a team of 2-3 people. All applications will be reviewed after the deadline and all applicants will be informed one week after the deadline. Groups that submit early have a small advantage because we have more time to read their applications. 6-8 teams will be selected to join the challenge.
Ideas are free for everyone to use but the IPR for any software codebase or documents produced during the competition will stay with the team. The host has the first right of refusal to negotiate further collaboration with the team to purchase or continue working on the project initiated during the challenge.
